Siemens Fusesaver and RCU fault protection

07 March, 2013

Fusesaver from Siemens is a fault-protection device designed for rural networks. An estimated 80% of faults occur as a result of objects, such as trees, debris and animals, coming into contact with overhead lines. Its developers claim the device will greatly reduce the duration of outages from such transient fault events.

Gridcon ACF Active Networked-Architecture Harmonic Filters

04 March, 2013

Gridcon ACF Active Networked-Architecture Harmonic Filters are suitable for tough environments and offer compensation on phase and neutral conductors. The filters utilise networked architecture, thus offering flexible topological control schemes and many physical plant layout options. Via Anybus ports, the filters can be integrated with industrial buses of virtually any type.

Narda Safety Test Solutions IDA-3106 low-frequency loop antenna

21 February, 2013

Narda Safety Test Solutions has extended the range of application for its Interference and Direction Analyzer down to very low frequencies with a new loop antenna. What goes down when the lights go out

15 February, 2013

One in four power outages and four of the five most significant blackouts occurring in Australia and New Zealand during 2012 were the result of severe weather. The causes included once-in-a-decade storm winds in Perth that left 161,000 people without power, severe winds that damaged poles and brought down lines in Taranaki, North Island, and damaging winds and torrential rainstorms in Sydney.

Understanding the most common power quality problems

30 January, 2013 by Nicolas Larue*

With the growing need for more base- and critical-load supply, many countries and industries struggle to manage their energy usage efficiently, despite the continuous availability of electrical power. This article provides detailed insights on the most common power quality problems, their likely effects and potential solutions.

The perils of an unbalanced network

24 January, 2013 by Subodh Bhatia

Frequently misunderstood and often not adequately factored in to engineering specs, harmonics can cause serious headaches for contractors. Unbalanced networks often warrant costly upgrades or rectification, which can leave the contractor carrying the can.
