Lighting Council joins with IESANZ

Lighting Council Australia and the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IESANZ) have formed a new alliance to address common lighting industry issues and strengthen the industry’s voice in government.

The foremost issues facing the alliance currently are the phasing out of inefficient light sources, minimum energy performance standards for lighting and industry education and training.

The alliance is not a merger, though. The chairman of Lighting Council Australia, Russell Loane, said that the two organisations still had individual roles to fill.

“Lighting Council represents manufacturers, suppliers and retailers, while IESANZ represents lighting professionals. There is an important ongoing role for both bodies,” he said.

The president of IESANZ, Roy Speed, said the lighting industry would benefit from the new relationship.

“Government wants a single industry voice on policy matters and the education role of IESANZ will be strengthened by the input from suppliers who form an important stakeholder group,” he said.

Lighting Council’s key goal is to encourage the use of environmentally appropriate, energy-efficient, quality lighting systems, while IESANZ aims to advance the art and science of lighting and the dissemination of knowledge to all interested parties.

An early goal of the alliance is to establish an entry-level lighting education course for the industry.
