The ThermaCAM P640 is a handheld infrared camera with an uncooled infrared detector that is claimed to produce higher quality images of 640 x 480 array than standard 320 x 240 arrays, enabling users to be twice as far away from the subject - for added safety - and still measure accurately.

The camera is designed for applications such as detecting loose connections, spotting overheated cable connections and detecting leaking voltage in power cable from oxidising high-voltage switches, badly secured connections, defective insulators and overheated motors or electrical circuitry that are found in utilities and manufacturing and building industries. The camera features interchangeable lenses to enhance the camera's ability to capture distant targets in high detail or view close up targets with a wide field of view and the ability to record full radiometric video sequences for inspecting moving targets such as motors or conveyor belts, with in-camera play-back allowing on-site review without a PC.

The camera also includes an interchangeable 1.3 megapixel visual camera, a swivel-mount 5.6" colour LCD screen, tiltable viewfinder and a three-hour battery, all housed a lightweight magnesium casing.

Additional features include 'hot spot' marker on the visual image, manual and auto focus, up to 8 x digital zoom with pan, simultaneous on-screen live and reference image, text and voice annotations, wireless communication and colour and sound alarms.
