Onboard weighing

Onboard weighing systems offer a number of key advantages, including space-saving, safety and cost benefits.

Every business looks to operate at maximum efficiency in order to avoid wastage and the subsequent losses this generates. Managers responsible for a fleet of trucks or vans should consider an onboard weighing system to improve transport and logistics efficiencies.

More efficient use of space

An onboard weighing system ensures that each vehicle is loaded to the optimum load level. Having every possible space loaded accurately and within the maximum weight allowance means that the vehicle operates at peak efficiency. Incorrect loading (be it underloading or overloading) leads to issues such as increased fuel costs, overloading fines and higher vehicle maintenance costs. Underloading vehicles often means sending two vehicles instead of one, effectively doubling costs.

Eliminate fees, charges and fines

Having the capacity to weigh goods onboard means avoiding weighbridge charges. Travelling long distances can involve multiple weighbridge stops and the costs soon add up. Additionally, the fines imposed for overloading vehicles are considerable, so ensuring that limits are not exceeded is important. For drivers picking up from multiple points, having an onboard weighing capability means they are always sure that limits are not exceeded.

Chain of responsibility (CoR) and safety

Chain of responsibility means that anyone involved in packing, loading or receiving goods as part of a business may be held liable for breaches of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL). Investing in an onboard weighing system ensures that vehicle loads can be accurately and quickly measured to ensure vehicle loads are not over the prescribed legal limits.

Overload alarms

Many onboard weighing systems include overload alarms, which will issue a warning in the event of overloading and allow the driver to rectify immediately.
