ACT primary school leads the way in sustainability projects

The Bonython Primary School recently had a visit from the Minister for Education and Training, Andrew Barr, to applaud their move towards increased sustainability through the use of solar power.

Mr Barr said the ACT government has funded 12 solar panels for the school, which generate electricity and aid in the teaching for sustainability subjects.

"Bonython Primary School is to be congratulated on this initiative, which involves installing a bank of 12 solar panels that will generate electricity for the school to use and will help it reduce its impact on the environment," Mr Barr said.

"The panels will be connected to an inverter, which will in turn be connected to the school's mains power system to allow use of the solar energy."

"The inverter will be connected to the school's computer network and library, enabling the students to keep track of the solar power data - a great resource for the teaching of sustainability."

The school is also applying to have a wind turbine on site, which would again form part of the students' learning programs around sustainability.

"This project is to be commended for not only helping the school reduce its environmental footprint but also giving students the chance to examine the workings of the solar panels," Mr Barr said.

"All new schools and upgrades in the ACT will have an increased focus on sustainability, with dedicated funding to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings."

Bonython Primary is one of the pilot schools involved in the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative and has a range of programs that get students involved in learning about ways to look after the environment.
