Work to begin on major Qld BESS
Australian electrical infrastructure company Enerven has been contracted to deliver Queensland’s 400 MW/1600 MWh Teebar Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking the company’s first major project in the state.
Located beside Powerlink’s existing Teebar Creek substation in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region, the Teebar BESS will provide four hours of energy storage. It is supported through the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), which aims to accelerate investment in renewable energy generation and clean dispatchable capacity.
Guided by project developer Atmos Renewables, Enerven will deliver the site preparation and construction facilities, along with BESS integration, a 275 kV substation and approximately 300 m of 275 kV overhead lines. Valo will supply the battery energy storage technology.
The project team said it is also working with the local Kabi Kabi people to build meaningful connections and create opportunities for involvement in the project.
Enerven CEO Richard Amato said Teebar would create local jobs and opportunities for suppliers while taking Enerven’s battery and high voltage expertise into Queensland.
“Teebar is our first major project in Queensland and the start of a new partnership with Atmos Renewables,” Amato said. “We’ve built our experience delivering large battery projects across Australia. Being selected for Teebar reflects the trust clients place in our team and gives us a strong foundation to grow in Queensland.”
Atmos Renewables CEO Nigel Baker said Enerven was well positioned to lead the safe and successful construction of the Teebar BESS, including supporting Atmos’s commitments to First Nations and local community stakeholders.
A ceremony at the Teebar site on 20 October will mark the start of construction, bringing together representatives from Atmos Renewables, Enerven, Valo and Powerlink. Commercial operation is targeted for late 2028.
