Major connection contract awarded for NSW solar farm

Australian company Intium has secured a major connection contract for the 31 MW Mulwala Solar Farm in southern New South Wales. The farm will deliver approximately 66 GWh per year.

Intium, which specialises in high voltage infrastructure, was awarded a Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) contract by European Energy Australia to carry out the work. Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, European Energy develops, finances, constructs and operates onshore and offshore wind and solar farms across 25 countries.

The project, located near Lambruk, 2 km north of Mulwala, will see Intium deliver the entire scope of connection, including the design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of a 22 kV switching station. This includes a two-kilometre underground cable linking the solar farm to Essential Energy’s Mulwala Zone Substation.

“Our mission at Intium is to transform Australia for a clean energy future, and this project is a prime example of our commitment to making that a reality in a cost-effective, innovative and reliable way,” said Nathan Rhodes, Executive General Manager at Intium.

“As a collective team, we have over 200 years of combined experience, a local workforce, and cover every step of the value chain, including project development support, feasibility assessments, technical connections modelling, design and engineering, construction, stakeholder engagement through to operations and maintenance.”

Following a competitive tender process, the contract was finalised on 8 September 2025. The Intium team will work closely with European Energy and advance the project through established connection processes with the local distribution network operator, Essential Energy, to ensure seamless integration into the local network.

The Mulwala Solar Farm is currently scheduled to be energised in 2026, with onsite construction expected to commence in October 2025. Initial estimates indicate the project could generate enough electricity to power about 20,800 homes and potentially avoid approximately 44,800 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

“This is a significant milestone for Intium and Australia’s transition to renewable energy,” said Babu Kumar, General Manager Engineering & Delivery at Intium. “It reflects the confidence our clients have in our ability to deliver technically complex infrastructure with agility and precision.

“We worked collaboratively with European Energy to develop a financially viable solution through a transparent process and led key aspects of the planning approvals. This has enabled the project to move at speed, with confidence, and in the spirit of a true partnership.”

Catriona McLeod, European Energy’s Country Manager for Australia, said the company was delighted to be working with Intium, thanks to its strong track record and reliable reputation. “The team at Intium have been invaluable in helping us minimise risk and get this complex project up and running,” she said.
