Lightening the load

The Light Bulb Saver app shows users how choosing energy efficient lights can help save money. Aimed firmly at the householder, it helps identify the best light bulbs to replace incandescent and halogen bulbs — and what savings can be achieved by transitioning to LED or CFL light sources. It also provides tips for choosing the right lighting for each room in a house.

Given that lighting is responsible for around 10% of the average household electricity bill, savings can be considerable. As an example, while LED sources may cost more to buy upfront than halogens, the substantially longer lamp life and reduced electricity demand (up to 75%) delivers savings in both replacement costs and overall energy usage charges.

The app was originally developed by the Swedish Energy Agency and has been customised for use in Australia by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science on behalf of the Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Program. It is available for both Android and Apple and free to download from either store.
