WA boosts electrical training at regional TAFEs

The WA Government is expanding training and upgrading infrastructure at South Regional TAFE (SR TAFE) campuses via a $1.15 million investment.

Electrical training opportunities will be expanded at SR TAFE’s Katanning, Esperance and Margaret River locations.

The Katanning and Esperance campuses will offer a Certificate II in Electrotechnology as part of the ‘VET Delivered to Secondary Students’ (VETDSS) program. This program sees SR TAFE partner with local schools to equip Year 11 and 12 students with foundational skills in electrotechnology.

The Margaret River campus will also now offer electrotechnology training.

“The Cook Labor government is delivering quality training for all Western Australians — no matter where they live,” said Skills and TAFE Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson.

“By investing in new and upgraded facilities at South Regional TAFE’s campuses, we’re helping Western Australians to get started in an electrical career, which is critical to our economy.”

SR TAFE commenced mainstream pre‑apprenticeship course delivery at the start of Semester 2, 2026, while VETDSS pre‑apprenticeships will be delivered at the campus from 2027.

The training investment is part of the government’s Made in WA plan, which recognises the critical role electricians play in delivering renewable energy projects and energy‑efficient technologies across regional and metropolitan WA.

Electrical apprenticeship commencements have increased in the state, with a rise of more than 24% in the 12 months to 30 June 2026. Completions also increased by almost 30% in the same period.

As of 30 June this year, there were more than 6115 electrical apprentices in training in Western Australia, the government said.
