Two companies share Sustainable Energy Association 2011 Award for Excellence

BuildingIQ and Perth’s Western Power have shared the annual Sustainable Energy Association 2011 Award for Excellence in Innovation for their combined work to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption and costs for Perth’s historic Council House.

The annual award recognises an outstanding project that embodies the principles of sustainable energy, energy efficiency and or greenhouse gas abatement and mitigation. It was a highlight of the Energising South East Asia conference in Perth.

Western Power Smart Grid Development Manager Lisa Cunningham said, “This award is welcome recognition of our efforts to improve the use of energy. Through intelligent thermostat control and the optimisation of all heating, ventilation and air-conditioning operations, the trial achieved a 12% reduction in overall energy consumption and up to a 30% reduction during Western Power’s demand management events.

“As a leading energy organisation, we have a responsibility to the community and this includes being forward thinking and responsive to the evolution in energy production.”

BuildingIQ Chief Executive Officer Michael Zimmerman said, “Our project at Perth Council House shows BuildingIQ’s value to owners of older buildings who want to improve their energy performance and reduce operating costs without capital expenditures.”

City of Perth CEO Frank Edwards said, “The City of Perth is always looking for ways to explore innovation in sustainability at all levels of our business. BuildingIQ has helped us become more efficient when it comes to practical ways to reduce our energy use and costs without compromising tenant comfort.”

Perth Council House was one of the first properties in Australia to use BuildingIQ’s innovative energy management software. The heritage-listed, 13-storey office building was opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1963 after Perth hosted the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
