Road safety lighting standard released

Wednesday, 09 July, 2008

SAI Global has announced a new standard to help lighting designers, engineers and manufacturers design, manufacture and install road lighting for the increased safety of pedestrians and vehicles.

'Standard AS/NZS 1158.5:2007, Lighting for roads and public spaces — Tunnels and underpasses' covers lighting for tunnels, underpasses and under bridges. It outlines specifications for luminaire and design data to help illuminate the approach to tunnels and to help motorists adapt their vision and prevent the shadowing of objects within an underpass.

Part 5 also provides further lighting requirements for illuminating the various zones.

The series of standards provides essential guidelines and calculations. It contains detailed information on installation, performance and maintenance of outdoor lighting for vehicular traffic (Category V) and pedestrian (Category P) lighting.
