New course for working safely with asbestos

Tradespeople are often drilling into asbestos unprotected and, with around one-third of all homes built in Australia containing asbestos products, the need for safe work practices is vital to ensure workers and the general public are kept safe around this dangerous substance.

The Work Health and Safety Act requires workers who are likely to work with asbestos to be appropriately trained.

The Course in Working Safely with Asbestos Containing Materials was developed to provide tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, gas fitters, carpenters and refrigeration mechanics with important information on how to work safely with these materials. In response to industry and government consultation, the course aims to bridge the gap between the Course in Asbestos Awareness and the Course in Asbestos Removal, Supervision and Assessment.

This is a nationally recognised and accredited course providing workers with knowledge and skills in worksite preparation, PPE requirements, safe drilling practices and decontamination. Prerequisites include post-trade and the course in Asbestos Awareness statement of attainment (10314NAT) or equivalent attainment (as approved by the course management committee).
