NECA backs industry regulator

Friday, 01 October, 2010

The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) joined the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) in its call for continued government strength in the regulation of the building industry.

Since its inception, the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) has improved compliance in workplace legislation across building sites. Integral to this success was ABCC Commissioner John Lloyd.

NECA’s chief executive officer, James Tinslay, acknowledged the strong leadership and professionalism of Lloyd and said that it was his drive and commitment to the building industry that led to the improvement in compliance.

“Under the leadership of Commissioner John Lloyd, the building industry has certainly improved and is now more accountable. This improvement has enabled the electrical and communication industry to work alongside other industries on a level playing field,” Tinslay said.

“Mr Lloyd was an honest broker in applying workplace laws to the building industry and was equitable to both employers and employees.”

As the peak industry group for the electrical and communications industry, NECA supports the ABCC and recognises the need for a stand-alone regulator of the building industry.

“The electrical industry calls on the government and the ABCC to continue its work in improving the compliance of the building industry,” Tinslay said.

NECA thanks Lloyd for his service to the industry and wishes him well for the future.
