Friday, 07 January, 2011

Lighting Council Australia, Osram Australia and the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand announced that Destiny Paris and Kristy Philp had been awarded the prestigious Klaus Engelhard Memorial Scholarship.

The Klaus Engelhard Memorial Scholarship provides tuition fees for the lighting course at either the University of Sydney, RMIT or Queensland University of Technology. On completion students undertake a field study tour of Osram’s headquarters in Germany. The recipients also receive invitations to attend SPARC 2011, the industry’s international lighting event at Darling Harbour in June.

The 2011/12 scholarship attracted a record 29 applicants. As a consequence of the high demand and excellent calibre of applicants, the providers agreed to expand the scholarships awarded from one to two.

In addition to Destiny and Kristy, the following applicants were shortlisted: Stephanie Hampson, Rozmarin Simich, Simm Steel and Vidya Sudhakarin.

The convenor of the Klaus Engelhard Memorial Scholarship Committee, Peter Portelli, congratulated the scholarship recipients, stating: “The high quality of applicants in general, and the outstanding calibre of Destiny, Kristy and the other shortlisted candidates in particular, bodes well for the future of the lighting industry.”

The Klaus Engelhard Memorial Scholarship encourages the study of lighting design and is a memorial to Klaus Engelhard, one of the first students to undertake lighting design studies at the University of Sydney. Klaus was a highly respected member of Australia’s lighting community. His studies were important in his becoming Managing Director of Osram Australia.
