Electricians support new product safety laws

Master Electricians has announced its support for the Queensland Government’s new product safety legislation that will strengthen laws against dangerous and dodgy products in the building industry.

The new laws will expand the existing powers of the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), allow inspectors to enter existing sites and enable the state government to recall non-conforming products.

MEA Manager of Advisory Services Jason O’Dwyer said that the electrical industry group welcomed the passing of the Building and Construction Legislation (Non-Conforming Products-Chain of Responsibility) Amendment Bill 2017. “MEA supports in principle laws designed to increase safety in the industry and we welcome the parliament passing these new product safety laws,” O’Dwyer said.

“At the same time we call on the government to ensure that enough funding is made available in order to prevent this tough new cop on the beat from just being a glorified inspector.

“Time and again we have seen the disastrous impact that cheap and dodgy products, usually imported from overseas, have had on safety in the industry.

“Dangerous building products pose a potential safety risk to each and every Queenslander so we need to make sure that enough funding is made available in order for these new laws to have their intended impact.”
