Building permit growth in inner Melbourne and regional Victoria
Although Victoria’s building industry collectively experienced a 5.5% decline in the value of building permits issued in the financial year to April 2009 (July 2008 to April 2009) compared to the same period in 2007–08, inner Melbourne, Gippsland and the North Central regions grew during the same period.
Announcing the latest statistics on Victoria’s building permit activity, Building Commissioner Tony Arnel said: “The value of permits issued decreased 5.5% to $15.9 billion; however, inner Melbourne grew 1.7% to $7209 million, Gippsland grew 0.9% to $629 million and North Central grew 20.7% to $636 million when compared to the same period in 2007–08.
“When we look at the data for building permit use, the Public Buildings building use category increased by 24.5% to $1293 million.”
