Truck platooning trials successful

Truck platooning trials in Europe have been successful, ending with the arrival of six convoys at Rotterdam Harbour in the Netherlands. The cross-border trials are the first of their kind, with the semiautomatic vehicles travelling in pairs from Germany and Sweden.

The concept involves wireless connection of the two vehicles, which then travel closely together at a speed (and via a route) determined by the leading truck. The trial involved vehicles from a number of manufacturers, including DAF, Dimler, IVECO, MAN, Scania and Volvo.

The long-term hope is that platooning will make logistics more efficient and provide higher road safety levels. At this stage, a driver is still required to be onboard each vehicle and, despite the success of this trial, reports suggest widescale adoption is not imminent.
