App to improve drone safety

Monday, 20 February, 2017

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is teaming up with software developer Drone Complier to deliver an app it hopes will reduce the risk of mid-air collision between drones and aircraft.

The ‘Can I fly there?’ app highlights no-drone zones including aerodromes, helicopter landing areas and restricted airspace, as well as locations where emergency services (such as firefighters) are in attendance.

Users can identify no-drone zones based on current locations or where they intend to fly. CASA said it will be ideal for recreational flyers, as well as those operating in the new under 2 kg commercial category.

It is due to be launched in May this year.
