Union raises safety concerns over smart meters

Monday, 21 February, 2011

The Electrical Trades Union (ETU) has criticised the industry regulator, Energy Safe Victoria, claiming it is allowing unqualified subcontractors to install smart meters in Victoria.

ETU Victorian Secretary Dean Mighell said in a recent radio interview at Radio 3AW that many of the workers installing smart meters were subcontractors and there had been no scrutiny of their qualifications.

These observations revolved around a recent report that a Melbourne woman received a shock from a new smart meter. The woman’s husband called the electricity supply company United Energy after she received the shock, and he was advised the meter was wired incorrectly.

Mighell has asked for a meeting with Michael O’Brien, Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources.
