TransGrid has been nominated as a finalist for the Best Specific Environmental Initiative Award at the 2012 United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) World Environment Day Awards. The nomination was for the company’s GreenGrid initiative, which it operates in partnership with Greening Australia.

The Award recognises organisations that have demonstrated dedication and innovation in regard to environmental best practice in environmental management.

“Our GreenGrid initiative involves on-ground works such as native revegetation, river restoration, protection of remnant vegetation, erosion and weed control, as well as biodiversity programs,” said TransGrid Executive General Manager Michael Gatt.

“Over the last 12 months we have concentrated on community and school education programs with regional partners to assist in protecting and improving the environment and encourage co-investment in future activities.”

GreenGrid won the 2011 Premier’s Public Sector Award for Sustainability and has protected, enhanced and re-established over 1500 hectares of land. The program has engaged over 370 landholders, several thousand community volunteers and staff members.
