Talented young sparkies at WorldSkills
Nurturing the next generation of electricians was top of mind for sponsor HPM Legrand at the recent 2010 WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Brisbane.
Challenging 14 contestants in the electrotechnology category to configure and install HPM Legrand products tested the young tradies’ skills ahead of the international Worldskills competition in London next year.
“Supporting these young electricians and helping them to realise their potential was a thrill,” said HPM Legrand CEO Giuseppe Parola. “There were hundreds of professionals competing for the national title and for a chance to take part in the international competition.
“Testing their skills with our new Arteor collection of conventional wiring devices and wireless and wired automation systems uncovered some real talent.”
WorldSkills Australia CEO Mark Callaghan added: “The dedication required just to compete is testament to the passion and drive of our young people who have chosen a career in a skill or trade, and it is extremely rewarding to be able to recognise the significant talent this country has to offer.”
Within the electrotechnology category, two competitions were held: Electrical Installations and Electrical Control.
Winners of the Electrical Installations competition were:
- Gold - Benjamin Houghton from TAFE NSW Western Institute, Dubbo Campus
- Silver - Nigel Bloxham from SkillsTech Australia, Acacia Ridge
- Bronze - Benjamin Magennis from TAFE NSW Western Institute, Dubbo Campus
Winners of the Electrical Control competition were:
- Gold - David McPherson from University of Ballarat, SMB TAFE Campus
