Wednesday, 23 February, 2011

For the first time in Australia, industry stakeholders from the renewable and low-emission energy sectors will come together to develop strategic directions for national Standards development, uniting the country’s renewable energy and low-emission industry players. The intent of the meeting is establish a rigorous, balanced and globally aligned development process for these standards.

Standards Australia will be convening an invitation-only Emerging Markets Energy Sector Advisory Forum on 10 March to determine the terms of reference for the future operation of the group.

“This is a major step forward for market participants and industry stakeholders,” said Colin Blair, Chief Executive Officer, Standards Australia. “The forum responds to the need for a strategic approach towards Standards development in emerging energy markets. The high-level forum will comprise market participants, industry groups, environmental bodies and government.

“The forum is an opportunity to provide strategic policy and will set in place the framework to ensure that future standards are relevant, rigorous and robust.”

The discussion will cover the full breadth of renewable and low-emission energy sources including, but not limited to, clean-coal, solar, geothermal, wind and biofuels.

“This is the first step in a process which will engage industry, conservation and government to ensure Australian Standards for emerging energy markets are developed through consensus and cooperation,” Blair concluded.
