Wednesday, 11 March, 2009

Standards Australia has released a new edition of 'AS 1049 Telecommunications cables — installation, sheath and jacket' to provide the communications cabling industry with specifications for materials used in cabling jackets, insulation and sheaths.

Part 1 of the standard specifies the material requirements of the finished products and some of the compounds used to manufacture telecommunication cables.

Part 2 sets out the test methods for evaluating the materials used, including polyolefins, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and polyamides. Many of these test procedures have been updated from the previous standard.

The standard is suitable for polymer manufacturers, cable manufacturers and cable end users.
