Royal Philips Electronics has announced the recent appointment of Alan McCarthy as managing director of Philips Electronics ANZ and general manager Philips Healthcare ANZ, effective 16 January 2012.

Alan brings with him more than 20 years of extensive experience in general and finance management, mainly in the medical capital equipment and devices industry. He joins Philips from CareFusion Ltd, where he was the vice president for sales and marketing for Critical Care Technologies, Asia Pacific. Prior to this he was the general manager, Cardinal Health Australia P/L, where he led the integration of multiple acquisitions.

In his role as market leader for Philips ANZ, McCarthy is responsible for a team of more than 750 staff across its Consumer Lifestyle, Lighting and Healthcare businesses. Michael Downie continues as general manager for Philips Lighting Australia, including responsibility for the Dynalite business, acquired by Philips in 2009, and will report to McCarthy in his role as MD of Philips Electronics ANZ.

Alan McCarthy succeeds Harry van Dyk who decided to leave Philips in 2011 to pursue interests outside of the company.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead the Philips ANZ business at a time when the world is looking in this direction for growth,” said McCarthy. “A key focus for the Philips Lighting business is to continue to deliver more energy-efficient lighting solutions to Australian homes and businesses. This includes growing the LED market in Australia, an area that is forecasted to reach 50% penetration in the global lighting market by 2015[1].”

In this dual role as MD of Philips Electronics ANZ and GM Philips Healthcare ANZ, McCarthy reports to Wayne Spittle, senior vice-president and commercial leader of Philips Healthcare Asia Pacific and to Harjit Gill, CEO of Philips ASEAN and Pacific, respectively.
