Nilsen NT and Combined Electrical Contracting Services were recognised in the Electrical Contractor category of this year’s Excellence in Building and Construction Awards at the Territory Construction Association presentation on Friday 15 August in the Darwin Convention Centre.

Nilsen NT won the Electrical Contractors award for the excellent carriage of the electrical aspects of the new convention centre. Combined Electrical Contracting Services received a Highly Commended for electrical work on the 28-storey high-rise Mantra Pandanas apartments.

Affiliated with NECA, the Territory Construction Association is a member-owned association with over 250 members from all sectors of the building and construction industry and other professional service, supply and manufacturing businesses.

“Recognising excellence in the Northern Territory construction industry, the awards are an important response to the ongoing pursuit of excellence, often in adversity — tropical weather and a highly transient workforce being just some of the challenges we face,” said Graham Kemp, Territory Construction Association general manager.

“For the complex and highly skilled work electrical contractors provide, these challenges are even more significant. Both the electrotechnology contracting companies which received recognition worked on landmark projects with unique challenges and are to be congratulated.”

In the course of the project, Nilsen also won the site’s Contractors Gold Hat award for consistency and diligence in OHS.

Fourth-year apprentice with KK Electrical James Strachan was also recognised as the top NT Electrical Apprentice at the Awards. Strachan is eligible for the NECA National Apprentice of the Year Awards, to be held in Sydney on 13 November 2008.
