A number of NT electrical contractors and apprentices were recognised for their professionalism in the building and construction industry at the recent Territory Construction Association awards.

Nilsen (NT) won the Electrical Contracting Award at the 2009 Excellence in Building and Construction Awards presentation on 21 August. The award was presented to Nilsen (NT) for its work on the Parliament House cabling upgrade in Darwin.

Danny Jansen, Northern Territory manager of Nilsen (NT), said: “It’s a great honour for our team to win this award. The large-scale project in such a well-known building had significant challenges for us as it needed to be completed while parliament and public spaces where still open.”

“We were able to install category 7 cabling without needing to iron out any faults. I put this down to good project management, our dedicated workforce and our motto that nothing is too hard.”

Shane Spice, a fourth-year apprentice with Combined Electrical Contracting Services, was also recognised as both the Apprentice of the Year and the NECA Electrical Apprentice of the Year.

Combined Electrical Managing Director Jeff Rees said: “The management and staff are delighted with the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence our apprentice, Shane Spice, has shown throughout his apprenticeship. He was justifiably proud and also typically humble in acknowledging the contribution to his success of both management and trade supervisors in his acceptance speech. He has, and will continue to, set the standard for Combined Electrical’s current group of apprentices.”

Combined Electrical was also awarded a Certificate of Commendation for the Electrical Contracting Award in recognition of its SkyCity Casino redevelopment project.

Affiliated with NECA, the Territory Construction Association is a member-owned association from all sectors of the building and construction industry and other professional service, supply and manufacturing businesses. NECA NT represents individual firms and companies whose principal business is the selling and installation, servicing and repair of electrical and communications products.

Graham Kemp, Executive Director of the Territory Construction Association said: “The awards recognise the best projects undertaken by the Northern Territory building and construction industry and are an important acknowledgement of the ongoing pursuit of excellence in our industry, particularly in these challenging economic times. We congratulate the winners on their success.”

These winners are eligible for the NECA National Excellence Awards, announced in Melbourne on 26 November 2009.
