New ministers welcomed by energy supply industry
The Energy Supply Association of Australia (ESAA) has welcomed newly appointed ministers Ian Macfarlane and Greg Hunt as Minister for Industry and Minister for Environment respectively.
ESAA Chief Executive Matthew Warren encouraged Prime Minister Tony Abbot to draw on Hunt’s and Macfarlane’s experience and expertise in their new roles.
“Ian Macfarlane has a successful track record as Industry Minister in the Howard government and has a depth of experience in energy policy that is crucial in order to address the challenges facing the industry in the 21st century,” Warren said.
“The energy sector globally is facing significant change from a range of new technologies from solar panels to smart meters to horizontal drilling for gas, as well as shifting demand patterns and consumer attitudes, amidst the ongoing challenge of addressing the risk of dangerous climate change.
“Consumers want a greater say in where their energy comes from and how it is used. Mr Macfarlane’s experience and understanding of the energy sector will be crucial to navigating these challenges.”
Greg Hunt has a strong understanding of the Environment portfolio after serving more than two years as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment in the Howard government, Warren said.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Mr Hunt to deliver emissions reductions through the delivery of the Direct Action scheme, and contributing to the transformation of the energy sector in Australia.”
