NECA 2018 ACT Excellence Awards — winners announced

The National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) has announced winners of the 2018 ACT Excellence Awards.

“This year’s entries demonstrate the quality of the work our members deliver to a range of high-profile and critical projects across the ACT,” said Suresh Manickam CEO NECA.

“The entries ranged from a new security system for the Australian War Memorial, a compliant network for the University of Canberra Public Hospital, communications and audiovisual (AV) technology at Canberra Airport Group’s head office through to automation of the lighting, AV system and pool for a private residence,” he said.

Shepherd Electrical, Mitchell won four awards — both the Energy Efficiency & Environment and Commercial Large categories for their design, build and fit-out of the Department of Social Services Tuggeranong Office which presented the opportunity for Shepherd to develop new skills in a new market. The WHS Management System Project category award was recognition of the challenges they faced on the ANU Back-up Feeder Project working with contaminated land, the proximity of Lake Burley Griffin, the need to protect endangered plants and insects, and ensuring the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles using the area. And the Commercial Small award recognised their delivery of a complex and fast-paced fit-out at the Essential Energy Fairbairn.

Detlevs Electrical, Hume took home the Domestic Residence award for their work on automating a new home in Jier. Due to the complexity of the build and the scope of the electrical works which involved power, lighting and distribution board installation with all aspects of the wiring needing to be hidden to preserve the aesthetics of the house.

“Having this complex installation completed before the date set by the owners to move in was extremely challenging, but seeing the quality of the finished product and the smile on the owner’s face was a proud moment,” said Scott Mukojid, Electrical Operations Manager.

Programmed Electrical Technologies, Mitchell won the Communications/Data – Medium category for the supply and installation of a warranted structured network for the University of Canberra Public Hospital which not only complied with the ACT Government’s ICT cabling specification, but exceeded the minimum requirements.

“Meeting the construction program which faced multiple delays and delivering an exceptional end project on budget was a proud achievement,” said Andrew Peel, Branch Manager.

All the winners of the 2018 NECA ACT Excellence Awards will be entered into NECA National Excellence Awards competing against winners from all other Australian states and territories for the coveted title of National Excellence Award winner.
