MP joins mining thought leaders

A thought leadership discussion at the upcoming Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition (QME) will feature The Hon. Dr Anthony Lynham, Minister for State Development and Natural Resources.

The event is being held in Mackay 26–28 July and Lynham will join industry experts to discuss the coal mining industry’s position, both domestically and internationally, particularly in relation to its future and what needs to be addressed in order to keep the Australian industry viable going forward.

Commenting on Queensland’s position as one of the world’s top producers and exporters of coal and liquefied natural gas, with 54 coal mines statewide having exported over 219 million tonnes of seaborne coal in 2014–15, Lynham said that the state’s resources sector remains the backbone of the region’s economy.

“We only have to look at the recent reopening of Central Queensland’s Isaac Plains Mine as an indication of returning investor confidence and the solid long-term prospects for our resources sector,” he said, adding that the Queensland Government is committed to supporting the resource sector to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive environment.

This support would take the shape of a 50% reduction in expenditure requirements for coal and mineral explorers, as well as heavy investment in innovation and the lowest payroll tax in Australia that would include a freeze on royalties.

The resources sector generates more than $2 billion in annual royalties and helps to support one in five jobs across Queensland, meaning it is well positioned to assist the mining industry in finding solutions for reducing production costs, extracting difficult-to-access resources and improving environmental outcomes, according to Lynham.

Organisers say attendees can expect this year’s panel of influencers to provide well-informed and insightful feedback, not just on the coal industry, but also on a range of pressing industry topics.

The QME Thought Leadership Panel will take place from 1.30 pm, Wednesday, 27 July, upstairs at the 500 Pavillion.

Tickets are limited and further information on tickets as well as the QME 2016 agenda for each day of the event can be obtained by visiting the event website here.
