Lighting Council releases LED buyers' guide

Monday, 31 August, 2015

A new buyers’ guide to help consumers and installers select safe and high-quality LED lighting products has been released by Lighting Council Australia.

LED Buyers Guide explains the important aspects when choosing LEDs, such as safety, brightness, efficiency, colour, compatibility, lifetime and installation. The guide also provides consumers with general lighting tips and cost-comparison charts on the average annual operating costs of LED lamps compared to the traditional incandescent and compact fluorescent technologies.

Lighting Council Australia’s CEO, Bryan Douglas, said that switching to LEDs is one of the fastest and easiest ways to cut energy bills.

“By replacing the five most common incandescent or halogen lamps, households can save around $70–$90 per year,” Douglas said.

The guide provides independent advice using plain language to help explain developments and changes in lighting technology and overall in the industry. However, despite product advancements, Douglas said consumers and installers need to be wary of substandard LEDs in the Australian market.

“There are many products in the market which fail to meet the performance claims of their suppliers, and in these cases, we encourage consumers to approach the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission,” he said.

The guide can be downloaded from Lighting Council Australia’s website: http://www.lightingcouncil.com.au/files/LED%20Buyers%20Guide_2015.pdf.
