Government provides boost for new dads

Friday, 11 January, 2013

As of 1 January 2013, the Australian Government’s Paid Parental Leave scheme now includes Dad and Partner Pay. Available to working dads or partners who care for a child born or adopted from 1 January, it provides eligible working dads or partners (including adopting parents and same-sex couples) with up to two weeks of government-funded pay at the National Minimum Wage (currently about $606 per week before tax).

The scheme is intended to provide financial support and enable dads to bond with their baby and support mums or partners in the vital early months of their baby’s life.

Paid directly by the Australian Government, employers do not have an administrative role, but simply need to discuss and agree on unpaid leave arrangements with employees. Employees then apply for Dad and Partner Pay themselves.

Most dads or partners may be eligible, but cannot work or be on paid leave during the Dad and Partner Pay period.
