Changes to electrical standard
AS/NZS 4836 (Safe working on or near low-voltage electrical installations and equipment) has been rewritten and recently released for public comment. This is a key standard for anyone working around electricity.
This standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee EL-001, Wiring Rules, to supersede AS/NZS 4836:2011. Master Electricians Australia has stressed the importance of electrical contractors understanding and having their say on the proposed changes to the standard.
The major changes in this edition involve additional information on the following:
- Principles of risk management, assessment of risk and risk treatment.
- Working with asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls.
- Working below ground level.
- Cutting cables and wiring enclosures.
- Selection and use of test equipment.
- Selection and use of personal protective equipment.
- Preservation of an incident scene.
