Call for reform after dangerous lamp recall
Following Kmart’s urgent recall of the ‘Anko’-branded Marmo Table Lamp, Lighting Council Australia has called for further action on enforcement of compliance for lighting products and other consumer electronics.
In its publication of the recall, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) stated that the product poses a “risk of serious injury or death from electric shock” due to the possible detachment of the power cord exposing live wires.
Lighting Council Australia has recently reported several portable lighting products being sold in Australia that are potentially non-compliant with safety regulations, leading the lighting body to have increased concern about a high level of non-compliance in certain areas of the lighting market.
The organisation is calling on federal and state regulators to do more to verify compliance for consumer electronics products. It also strongly advises consumers to always check that products are marked with the Australian Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) before purchase (marked on the packaging of compliant products).
