Bringing flexible energy to utilities and consumers

US smart energy tech company Sense has formed an Asia–Pacific regional partnership with Landis+Gyr, a global provider of integrated energy management solutions.

The partnership will initially focus on supporting the fast-developing Australian and New Zealand markets to make the transition to consumer energy resources (CER) systems. CER include solar panels, batteries, EVs and heat pump systems.

Sense’s software will be integrated into Landis+Gyr’s grid edge-ready smart meters in Australia and New Zealand, providing real-time analytics by utilising high-resolution waveform sensing capabilities. This merged technology, which the companies have already deployed in North America, is designed to enable utilities and consumers to manage energy more proactively.

“The future of the grid is flexible, decarbonised, integrated and powered by machine learning,” said David Maclean, Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific, Landis+Gyr.

“With Australia leading the world in the uptake of rooftop solar and more than 80% of New Zealand’s electricity generated by renewables, our partnership with Sense positions Landis+Gyr well to support distribution networks, retailers, metering services providers and consumers to unlock more benefits from the future flexible grid with real-time insights,” he added.

With Sense’s machine learning software integrated in Landis+Gyr’s smart meters, utilities should be able to identify fault conditions, predict peak demand and provide proactive safety alerts that ultimately support the growth and integration of CER.

Consumers will in turn receive real-time information about different household devices as they interact with other smart devices such as solar, batteries and EVs, enabling residents to monitor, control and track their energy usage.

“We’re delighted that Sense and Landis+Gyr will now bring their proven grid edge intelligence capabilities to Australia and New Zealand, helping to engage consumers whilst cost-effectively expanding grid capacity and delivering the energy transition,” said Michael Jary, Managing Director for Sense in EMEA and APAC.
