AEMC review will spark energy reform, CEC says
The Australian Energy Market Commission’s (AEMC's) review, The Power of Choice, will spark energy reform to help households better manage their bills over the long term, the Clean Energy Council (CEC) has said.
According to CEC Chief Executive David Green, the electricity market is on the cusp of major reform that will affect the way electricity is generated and delivered in decades to come.
“Electricity prices continue to rise and it is becoming abundantly clear that the energy system which has provided us with reliable power is in increasingly urgent need of reform,” Green said.
“Significantly, this review was published just as the UK government introduced new legislation to transform the UK energy market and provide the certainty that investors seek in order to keep the power on.
“Flexible pricing, more efficient energy technology, smart meters and better demand management will also help businesses to become more competitive by reducing the amount of money they spend on power.”
“As we shift towards cleaner sources of electricity, we also need to make sure appropriate incentives are in place so we can all use less electricity, especially at peak times, without affecting the services we need, value and enjoy,” Green concluded.
