Display fridge banned due to fire risk

WA’s electrical safety regulator has banned the use, sale and hire of a BeefEater outdoor display fridge, due to fire risk.

The prohibition applies to BeefEater BS28200 models made between 2017 and 2019 with the serial numbers 72900000 through to 95299999. The fridges have transparent double doors and are designed for use in al fresco areas.

Owners should switch them off and contact Electrolux Home Products at 1800 001 218 or productrecall@electrolux.com. Information to date from the company indicates more than 500 affected fridges were sold in WA.

WA’s Director of Energy Safety, Saj Abdoolakhan, said the appliances were linked to seven electrical fires in the Perth area since 2019.

“Investigations have identified that some elements of the design of the fridge allow water entry into the main control board, leading to possible component failure,” Abdoolakhan said.

“This is a serious safety issue. If you believe you have one of these appliances, switch it off and check the model and serial numbers on the information panel on the inside wall of the fridge.

“Contact Electrolux Home Products for further advice and remember the fridge cannot be sold, including second-hand.

“I have advised our interstate counterparts of our concerns and action. Electrolux Home Products has cooperated with our investigation and I understand work is underway towards a national recall.”
