Replacements for faulty solar isolator switches

Monday, 01 December, 2014

The Office of Fair Trading has issued a product safety recall notice against Cairns-based solar company Blueline Solar, after an investigation revealed that the company failed to provide replacements for unsafe solar isolator switches.

Blueline Solar has to provide customers with the refund or replacement they are entitled to or face penalties of up to $1.1 million. The notice stated Blueline Solar had not taken sufficient action to ensure the faulty isolators, recalled on 8 May, did not cause loss, harm or injury to consumers.

Two of the recalled models of isolator switches were incorporated by Blueline Solar into their solar systems, then installed by a number of solar installers and electricians around Queensland. Several customers were unable to secure a refund or replacement from Blueline Solar and its distribution arm, Queensland Renewable Energy.

In contrast, most other electrical suppliers and installers across Queensland honoured their responsibilities and worked to replace the faulty isolator switches free of charge. Customers should contact their installer directly to seek a refund or replacement. If consumers are unable to achieve a satisfactory resolution, they may lodge a complaint at www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au.
