Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards

The Victoria Division of Engineers Australia recently hosted its 2009 Engineering Excellence Awards, recognising engineering and technological brilliance in leading-edge engineering projects in Victoria across a range of disciplines.

Award recipients were:

  • Engineering Excellence Award for Engineering Innovation:
    • Award of Excellence – Coordinated Freeway Ramp Signals Pilot on M1 Freeway (VicRoads);
    • High Commendation – High Voltage Substation Augmentation (Siemens).
  • Engineering Excellence Award for Environment and Sustainability:
    • Award of Excellence – Three Delta Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project (GHD);
    • High Commendations – Mini Hydro Generating Plants, Improving the Environment (jointly entered by Melbourne Water and Hydro Tasmania Consulting); and Infrastructure Impacts for Garnaut Climate Change Review (AECOM).
  • Engineering Excellence Award for Industrial Development and Manufacturing:
    • Award of Excellence – Compound Plant for Lafarge Plasterboard (Kockums Bulk Systems);
    • High Commendation – Laverton Concrete Recycling Plant (ideas*).
  • Engineering Excellence Award for Infrastructure – projects <$20m:
    • Award of Excellence – Monash Centre of Election Microscopy (AECOM);
    • High Commendation – MCG Concourse Redevelopment (McConnell Dowell).
  • Engineering Excellence Award for Infrastructure – projects >$20m:
    • Awards of Excellence:
      • Wimmera Mallee Pipeline Project, Supply Systems (GWM Water),
      • FutureFlow - G.M.W's Alliance Providing Irrigation Renewal to Northern Victoria (jointly entered by FutureFlow, Goulburn-Murray Water),
      • Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre Project (jointly entered by Arup, Bonacci Group, Major Projects Victoria and Bovis Lend Lease),
      • EastLink (jointly entered by Thiess John Holland Joint Venture, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Hyder Consulting and Aurecon).
  • Engineering Excellence Award for Technology:
    • Award of Excellence – Coordinated Freeway Ramp Signals Pilot on M1 Freeway (VicRoads);
    • High Commendation – The Flinders Sewerage Project - An Innovative backlog Sewerage Scheme (jointly entered by MWH, South East Water and Mono Pumps).
  • Engineering Excellence Award for Workplace Innovation:
    • Award of Excellence – GHD's Innovation Program: Acting on Great Ideas (GHD);
    • High Commendation – Technical Development Program for Water Industry Engineers (City West Water).
  • Young Professional Engineer Award:
    • Winner – Alesha Printz of Comdain Civil Constructions;
    • High Commendation – David Gloag of Sinclair Knight Merz.

Finalists of the Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards are eligible to enter the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards 2009, held at Parliament House in Canberra in November.
