AuSES renamed as Australian Solar Council

The Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES) has been renamed as the Australian Solar Council. The group says its new trading name is reflective of the transformation impact of solar energy in Australia.

“Solar is quickly becoming a mainstream source of energy for hundreds of thousands of Australian households,” said John Grimes, CEO of the Australian Solar Council.

“With forecasts from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) of up to 18,000 megawatts of rooftop solar power being generated across Australia by 2031, and others such as Solar Business Services predicting 40,000 megawatts by 2030, it is clear that solar will play an increasingly important and influential role in meeting our future power needs.”

“Currently, more than four million Australians have rooftop solar, while the potential for community-based solar, commercial solar and big solar in Australia is untapped,” Grimes said.

The Australian Solar Council said the rate of rooftop solar installation has increased tenfold in Australia over the last few years.

“Australia’s potential as a mass market for solar energy is also attracting some of the world’s biggest solar energy companies, including Yingli Solar of China which has recently announced it will set up a new regional headquarters in Sydney,” said Grimes.

Australia will continue to be a major global market for solar, Grimes said, thanks to abundant resources, increased affordability and strong demand.

“This presents tremendous opportunities for Australian households looking to keep their energy costs under control while also supporting the growth of the solar industry and the economic activity that comes from the development and installation of solar generation capacity,” said Grimes.

“Our job will be to dispel the myths and misinformation that is put to policymakers and the public about the practicalities and potential of solar as the driver of Australia’s clean energy future.”
