Network productivity increasing, despite upheaval

The Australian Energy Regulator’s (AER) latest benchmarking report shows the productivity of Australia’s electricity networks continues to improve, defying national trends in other sectors.
The report demonstrates that productivity in the distribution networks increased in 2021, in line with the general trend since 2015.
Energy Networks Australia CEO Andrew Dillon said the results reflected the work networks were doing to maintain and enhance grid stability and power reliability.
“This report shows that networks are outperforming other parts of the utility sector and broader economy, which is good news for customers. It means more reliable electricity supply and helps keep downward pressure on network prices,” he said.
“At a time of great upheaval in the market, Australia’s energy distribution and transmission networks not only continue to be the most stable part of the supply chain but are improving their performance.”
Dillon said the result showed the value of Australia’s strong incentive-based regulatory framework.
“The framework provides incentives to keep continuing to improve productivity. As they do, these efficiencies get passed on to customers, which helps put downward pressure on power bills.”
