NECA welcomes action on energy efficiency

Australia’s peak industry body for electrical contractors, NECA, welcomes the federal government’s commitment to growing the nation’s renewable energy capabilities. This commitment is demonstrated by the $652.5 million Renewable Energy Future Fund announced in this year’s Budget. It is anticipated that this fund will continue to support the growth of the industry of which electrical contractors are a major contributor.

The fund has two aims, the second of which is “to enhance the take-up of industrial, commercial and residential energy efficiency, helping Australian businesses and households reduce their energy consumption”.

NECA CEO James Tinslay commented: “We are encouraged by the government’s commitment to energy efficiency and how this will benefit both electrical contractors and the consumer.

“Much of the work around renewable energy requires licensed electricians. As an industry association, we are encouraging our members to undertake training and install technologies which provide a financial and environmental benefit for consumers. It is our hope that these initiatives will provide real energy-efficient outcomes for residents and business.”

One way NECA is assisting electrical contractors and their customers is through the EcoSmart Electricians program. The program is a training and accreditation program that encourages and supports electrical contractors to provide energy-efficient solutions to their customers.

EcoSmart Electricians Program Manager Stu Norman added: “We have now trained over 1200 electricians and have around 300 accredited contractors nationwide, who are providing real energy-efficient solutions. Energy efficiency is about more than putting a solar panel on the roof. Both generation and demand need to be examined to provide a truly energy-efficient solution.”
