Industry video project to boost apprenticeships

Wednesday, 19 March, 2014

Apprentices are the lifeblood of the electrical contracting industry. It is therefore imperative that our younger generation are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about the career pathways available to them within our industry.

This is what prompted Master Electricians Australia (MEA) to go behind the scenes with major players in the industry to produce a tell-all video project aimed at providing career information within the energy industry. MEA has launched its very first careers videos in the forms of six short films each three to five minutes in length.

These films showcase the career pathways that are available to budding young apprentices in the industry. They are aimed at providing students and apprentices with a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes of the energy industry. They portray a realistic view of what working in the industry is like by featuring real people in real jobs in the industry who, like everyone else, have worked their way up from the bottom.

Many young people have the misconception that once a particular apprenticeship is completed they are stuck in the one job for the rest of their career. That isn’t true and these videos show that ours is a diverse industry with hundreds of career options.

Many students struggle to step into an industry for the first time and it is MEA’s hope that these videos will be a real and tangible starting point for many young people who are considering the energy industry as a career path.

The careers videos will be shown to school students, high schools, parents, career advisers, job seekers and employers, as well as made available for use online through websites and social media channels.

The ApprenticeConnect Advisors Project is an initiative of Master Electricians Australia and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Industry through the Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Package.
