Master Electricians Australia (MEA) has released a five-point electrical safety checklist to ensure the protection of NSW and Qld families living in flood- and storm-affected homes. Homeowners are being urged not to put their own lives, or their families lives, at risk by ignoring the necessary precautions around water-damaged electrical appliances and fittings.

The association urges owners of water-damaged homes to firstly have all electrical fittings and appliances tested by a licensed electrician. They state that many flood victims my be tempted to avoid calling an electrician due to the cost and recommend organising a quote in writing to avoid hidden extra charges.

In most cases, electrical services fees can be included in an insurance claim, so homeowners should contact their insurer and talk about the cost of damage. The checklist includes the following information for the public:

  1. Put the safety of yourself and your family first, have your water-damaged electrical appliances and fittings checked by an licensed electrical contractor.
  2. Use only a licensed electrical contractor. Call the Master Electricians Australia hotline on 1300 889 198 for further advice.
  3. Talk to your insurance company about the cost of water damage and determine if electrical work is covered under your policy.
  4. Make sure you get a written quote from your chosen electrical contractor and agree on a price upfront.
  5. Be clear about any extra service charges as you don’t need the added stress of any surprise fees.
