The winners of the 2016 Fleet Safety Awards have been announced.

The Fleet Safety Award went to DHL Supply Chain and Kasey Caston. The supply chain business achieved its safety goals through establishment of an onboard vehicle monitoring system, coupled with a safe driver reward program designed to drive down accident rates and improve safety culture.

The reward program used positive reinforcement to change attitudes and prevent accidents. Telematics helped identify risky behaviour and recorded excessive idle, heavy braking, dramatic acceleration and speeding. These programs saw DHL halve its accident rate in distance driven and per 100 vehicles, plus the average cost per vehicle as a by-product.

Austin Health and Jan Zagari took home the Fleet Environment Award. The company reduced its CO2 footprint, fuel consumption and travel distances through a scheme of carpooling and more organised work scheduling. In addition, old tyres are now completely recycled. Zagari is credited with bringing an ad hoc system into order and changing company attitudes.

The health organisation now ensures smaller vehicles phase out larger ones, the online booking system records vehicle use and a rigorous maintenance regime ensures the fleet runs efficiently.

Catherine Parker from CSIRO won the Fleet Manager of the Year Award. Parker was recognised for transforming the incredibly diverse research body’s Australia-wide fleet and unifying a fleet management system across nearly 60 national worksites.

Parker led the development of a brand new fleet policy to replace CSIRO’s decade-old motor vehicle policy. She unified 18 different data streams and approaches and redeveloped the organisation’s asset register on top of establishing a strong supplier network. Under her leadership, CSIRO acquired 10 Nissan Leaf fully electric vehicles.

AfMA’s judging committee regarded Catherine Parker’s efforts as an example to other fleet managers, no matter how big or small their fleet, of how to apply their skills to the role to achieve the best outcome.

Congratulations to all of the winners.
